Chapter 7 - The Inheritance Ethan Hid From HerThe silence after Richard Pierce's words was heavier than anything Grace had felt that night.

Not the silence after the slap.

Not the silence after Ethan admitted the affair.

Not even the silence after she discovered Lauren had been in his life for almost a year.

This was different.

Because this time, the secret wasn't about another woman.

It was about her.

Grace stared at Ethan.

Her husband.

The man she had shared a home with.

The man who knew every detail of her life.

Or at least she thought he did.

"What is he talking about?"

Ethan didn't answer.

And that was all Grace needed to see.

Her heart sank.

"Ethan."

His name came out softer than she intended.

Almost like a final chance.

"Tell me he is lying."

Ethan looked at her.

But he couldn't.

He couldn't give her the one thing she wanted.

A simple sentence.

A simple reassurance.

Because the truth was written all over his face.

James slowly reached for the phone.

"Richard."

The voice on the other end responded immediately.

"Yes?"

"You have five seconds to explain what you mean."

Richard laughed.

"Still protecting your sister. I expected nothing less."

James's expression hardened.

"You don't know anything about my family."

"Actually, James, I know much more than you think."

Grace felt a chill.

Michael stepped closer.

"Who are you talking about?"

Richard ignored him.

"Grace Walker was never just the wife of a struggling businessman."

Grace looked at Ethan.

"What does that mean?"

Richard continued.

"Her grandmother left her something."

Grace frowned.

"My grandmother passed away years ago."

"Yes."

Richard's voice remained calm.

"And she left instructions that nobody followed."

The room became silent.

Grace shook her head.

"No."

She looked at Ethan.

"No, this doesn't make sense."

Ethan finally spoke.

"Grace..."

Her eyes immediately moved to him.

"How long?"

He looked down.

"How long have you known?"

Ethan didn't answer.

James stepped forward.

"Answer her."

Ethan swallowed.

"Since before we got married."

The words hit harder than anything else.

Before they got married.

Before she promised forever.

Before she built a life with him.

Grace took a step back.

"You knew something about my family before I married you?"

Ethan looked miserable.

"Yes."

"And you never told me?"

"I was going to."

"When?"

She laughed softly.

"When was the perfect moment, Ethan?"

Her voice shook.

"After five years?"

"After you used my trust?"

"After you brought another woman into our home?"

"After you put our marriage at risk?"

Ethan looked away.

James turned to Ethan.

"What exactly did she inherit?"

Ethan hesitated.

Michael's eyes narrowed.

"Don't make us ask twice."

Ethan sat down slowly.

"Grace's grandmother, Evelyn Walker, owned several properties."

Grace blinked.

"What?"

"She built a small real estate portfolio before she died."

James frowned.

"Everyone knew that."

"No."

Ethan shook his head.

"Everyone knew about the properties."

He looked at Grace.

"But not the company."

Grace stared.

"What company?"

Ethan took a breath.

"Walker Heritage Holdings."

Nobody spoke.

Even James looked surprised.

Michael immediately reached for his phone.

He typed quickly.

Then stopped.

"Impossible."

"What?"

Michael looked up.

"The company was dissolved years ago."

Ethan shook his head.

"That is what everyone believed."

Grace felt like she was watching her own life from outside her body.

Her grandmother.

Her family.

A company.

Secrets.

All hidden.

"Why would my grandmother hide this from me?"

Ethan looked at her.

"Because she didn't trust everyone around you."

The sentence bothered Grace.

"Everyone?"

Ethan nodded.

"She believed money changes people."

James looked at him.

"And you were one of those people?"

Ethan's face tightened.

"I didn't know at first."

"Didn't know what?"

"That Grace was the beneficiary."

The room went silent.

Grace looked at him.

"Then how did you know?"

Ethan didn't answer.

James stepped closer.

"How did you know?"

Finally, Ethan whispered:

"Because I saw the documents."

Michael's face changed.

"When?"

"During our engagement."

Grace closed her eyes.

During their engagement.

The happiest time of her life.

A time she remembered as pure.

But now she wondered.

How much of it had been built on a lie?

"You married me because of money."

The sentence escaped before Grace could stop it.

Ethan immediately looked up.

"No."

But he answered too quickly.

And that made it worse.

Grace smiled sadly.

"You don't even know how to prove that anymore."

"I loved you."

"Did you?"

Her voice wasn't angry.

That was what hurt.

She sounded tired.

"I loved you before I had anything."

Ethan stood.

"I know."

"Do you?"

Grace looked at him.

"Because I spent five years thinking I was building a life with a man who loved me."

A pause.

"But maybe you were building a business plan."

"No."

Ethan shook his head.

"That isn't true."

"Then tell me what is true."

He couldn't.

Again.

The front door suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Elegant.

Carrying a leather handbag.

Grace immediately recognized her.

"Mrs. Bennett?"

The woman who managed her grandmother's estate.

Grace hadn't seen her in years.

"Grace."

Her voice was gentle.

"I'm sorry I came without warning."

James stepped forward.

"Who is she?"

Grace answered quietly.

"My grandmother's attorney."

The woman's eyes moved around the room.

Then stopped on Ethan.

Her expression changed.

"I see."

Grace noticed.

"You know him?"

Mrs. Bennett looked uncomfortable.

"Unfortunately."

The room went silent.

"What does that mean?"

The woman placed the handbag on the table.

"I came because I received a message from your grandmother's trust."

Grace frowned.

"My grandmother died five years ago."

"Yes."

Mrs. Bennett looked at Ethan.

"But the final condition was only activated when you reached a certain point in your marriage."

Everyone looked confused.

"Activated?"

The woman nodded.

"Your grandmother included a protection clause."

Grace stared.

"A protection clause?"

"Yes."

She opened her handbag.

Inside was a sealed envelope.

With Grace's name written across it.

"I was instructed to deliver this only if Ethan Walker ever attempted to gain control of your inherited assets."

The room went completely still.

Grace looked at Ethan.

His face had lost all color.

Because he knew.

He knew exactly what that envelope meant.

Mrs. Bennett handed it to Grace.

"Your grandmother was very specific."

Grace slowly opened it.

Inside was one handwritten page.

Only one sentence was visible.

Her grandmother's handwriting.

"My dear Grace, if you are reading this, it means someone you trusted has tried to take what was never theirs."

Grace stopped breathing.

And beneath that sentence was another.

"I need you to know the truth about the man you married."

Everyone looked at Ethan.

And for the first time...

May you like

Grace realized the biggest betrayal might not have started six weeks ago.

It might have started before she ever walked down the aisle.
