Breaking

Chapter 9 - The Woman Behind the LiesThe next morning, Grace woke up before sunrise.

For years, mornings had been her favorite time.

She loved the quiet.

The soft light coming through the bedroom curtains.

The smell of coffee.

The small routines she and Ethan built together.

But that morning, everything felt different.

The bedroom that once felt like home felt like a museum.

A place filled with memories of a life that no longer existed.

Grace sat on the edge of the bed.

Her hand moved instinctively toward her stomach.

The baby was still there.

Her child.

The one thing in her life that remained completely innocent.

"Good morning," she whispered.

A small smile appeared.

For the first time in days, something inside her felt steady.

Not because things were okay.

They weren't.

But because she finally understood something.

She could survive this.

Downstairs, her brothers were already waiting.

James stood near the kitchen window.

Michael was reading through documents.

Daniel was making breakfast.

The sight almost made Grace emotional.

Because this was what family looked like.

Not perfect.

Not without problems.

But present.

Always present.

"You guys didn't have to stay."

Daniel turned immediately.

"Yes, we did."

Grace smiled slightly.

"You always answer like that."

"Because you always say things you don't mean."

She looked at him.

Daniel lowered his voice.

"You say you don't need help because you don't want to be a burden."

A pause.

"But Grace, you aren't a burden."

Those words almost broke her.

Because somewhere along the way, she had started believing asking for help meant failing.

Her brothers reminded her it meant trusting people.

James placed a folder on the table.

"We need to talk about Ethan's company."

Grace nodded.

"I know."

Michael looked at her carefully.

"You don't have to do this today."

"I do."

James studied her.

"You sure?"

Grace looked at the documents.

"Yes."

Her voice was calm.

"I spent five years protecting someone else's future."

A pause.

"Now I need to protect mine."

The first thing they discovered was worse than expected.

Michael spread several documents across the table.

"Ethan wasn't just hiding debt."

Grace looked up.

"What else?"

"He was transferring ownership."

"Of what?"

Michael pointed.

"Several company assets."

James frowned.

"To whom?"

Michael looked at him.

"Not whom."

A pause.

"Where."

Grace felt uneasy.

"Where?"

Michael looked at the papers.

"An offshore holding company."

The room became silent.

Grace stared.

"Are you saying he was hiding money?"

Michael shook his head.

"I'm saying we need more information."

James nodded.

"But it explains why he was desperate."

Grace looked down.

Everything suddenly connected.

The late nights.

The secrecy.

The distance.

Lauren.

The lies.

But one question remained.

Why?

At that moment, Grace's phone rang.

The name appeared.

Lauren Pierce.

Everyone looked at it.

Daniel immediately stood.

"Don't answer."

Grace looked at the screen.

"I need to."

James frowned.

"Grace."

She looked at him.

"If she knows something, I need the truth."

Nobody argued.

Grace answered.

"Hello."

There was silence.

Then Lauren spoke.

"I need to meet you."

Grace's expression didn't change.

"Why?"

"I need to explain."

Grace almost laughed.

"Explain what?"

A pause.

"The truth about Ethan."

The room became quiet.

Grace looked at her brothers.

"When?"

"An hour."

"Where?"

"A coffee shop downtown."

Grace agreed.

But before hanging up, Lauren said something unexpected.

"Grace..."

"Yes?"

"I'm sorry."

Grace didn't respond.

Because sorry was a word people often used after they realized they had lost control.

An hour later, Grace arrived at the coffee shop.

Her brothers stayed nearby.

Not because they didn't trust her.

Because they didn't trust anyone else.

Lauren was already sitting at a corner table.

But she looked different.

Gone was the confident woman from the anniversary dinner.

Gone was the woman who smiled while holding Ethan's arm.

Now she looked exhausted.

"I didn't expect you to come alone."

Grace sat down.

"I didn't."

Lauren glanced outside.

Saw James's car.

She nodded.

"I understand."

For a moment, neither woman spoke.

Then Lauren said:

"Ethan told me you would never fight back."

Grace's expression remained calm.

"He said that?"

"Yes."

Lauren looked down.

"He said you were too kind."

A bitter smile appeared.

"He said you would forgive anything."

Grace felt something cold.

Because Ethan had misunderstood her kindness.

He had mistaken it for weakness.

"What do you want?"

Lauren took a breath.

"The truth."

Grace looked at her.

"You were part of this."

Lauren nodded.

"Yes."

At least she admitted it.

That surprised Grace.

"My father wanted Walker Development."

Grace listened.

"Your father?"

"Richard Pierce."

Lauren looked ashamed.

"He saw Ethan as an opportunity."

"An opportunity?"

"Yes."

She lowered her voice.

"Ethan was desperate."

Grace's eyes narrowed.

"And you?"

Lauren looked away.

"I was supposed to make him trust me."

Silence.

"How?"

Lauren swallowed.

"By becoming the person he thought understood him."

Grace felt sick.

Not because Lauren was telling her something she didn't know.

But because it confirmed everything.

"He thought I was his escape."

Lauren looked at Grace.

"But you were the only person who ever actually believed in him."

Grace said nothing.

Lauren continued.

"That's why my father became worried."

"Why?"

"Because Ethan started changing."

Grace frowned.

"Changing?"

"Yes."

Lauren looked down.

"He started caring about you again."

That surprised Grace.

"What?"

Lauren nodded.

"He started questioning the deal."

"What deal?"

Lauren hesitated.

Then whispered:

"The deal was simple."

A pause.

"Help us gain access to Walker Heritage Holdings."

Grace froze.

"Access to my inheritance?"

Lauren nodded.

"Ethan knew your grandmother's company was worth far more than Walker Development."

The world seemed to stop.

Grace whispered:

"He married me for it."

Lauren looked away.

"I think he planned to."

The sentence hurt.

But Grace needed to hear it.

"Then why didn't he?"

Lauren's eyes filled slightly.

"Because somewhere along the way..."

She paused.

"He actually fell in love with you."

Grace looked at her.

For a moment, she hated that those words still affected her.

Because part of her wanted to believe them.

But another part knew something important.

Love without honesty was not enough.

Before Grace could respond, Lauren's phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

Her face changed.

"What?"

Grace noticed.

"Who is it?"

Lauren slowly turned the phone around.

A message appeared.

From Richard Pierce.

You were supposed to destroy the marriage, not confess.

Grace felt cold.

Lauren whispered:

"He knows I'm here."

Then another message arrived.

This one made Lauren's face go pale.

If Grace learns the full truth, Ethan won't be the only one who loses everything.

Grace stared at the screen.

"What full truth?"

Lauren looked at her.

And for the first time...

Grace saw fear in Lauren's eyes.

"Grace..."

"What?"

Lauren swallowed.

"There is something Ethan never told you."

Grace's heart tightened.

"Another secret?"

Lauren nodded.

"Yes."

"What?"

Lauren looked directly at her.

"Your grandmother didn't just leave you a company."

A pause.

"She left you evidence."

Grace frowned.

"Evidence of what?"

Lauren whispered:

"Evidence that someone inside your family helped destroy her first company."

Grace froze.

"My family?"

Lauren nodded.

"And Ethan knows who it was."

Grace sat completely still.

Because suddenly the story was no longer about a cheating husband.

May you like

It was about a secret that had been buried for decades.

And Ethan Walker had been standing on top of it the entire time.
