Chapter 10 - The Truth Her Grandmother Died ProtectingGrace didn't speak for almost a full minute.

The noise of the coffee shop disappeared.

The voices around her faded.

The sound of cups being placed on tables.

The quiet conversations.

The music playing softly in the background.

None of it mattered.

Because one sentence had changed everything.

Someone inside your family helped destroy her first company.

Grace looked at Lauren.

"Who?"

Lauren looked uncomfortable.

"I don't know everything."

"But you know enough."

Lauren nodded slowly.

"I know Richard Pierce has been searching for those documents for years."

"What documents?"

"The evidence your grandmother kept."

Grace felt a chill.

"My grandmother knew?"

"Yes."

"She knew someone betrayed her?"

Lauren nodded.

"She knew before she died."

Grace leaned back.

Her mind was racing.

For years, she believed her grandmother's death was simply the end of an era.

She believed Walker Heritage Holdings disappeared because of business failures.

But now...

There was something else.

A hidden battle.

A secret nobody told her.

"Why didn't she tell me?"

Lauren looked at her.

"Because she was protecting you."

Grace almost smiled.

Everyone kept saying that.

Protecting her.

Her grandmother.

Her brothers.

Even Ethan had used those words.

But Grace was starting to understand something.

Protection without truth could become another kind of prison.

When Grace returned home, Ethan was waiting.

She knew immediately.

He had been expecting this conversation.

The moment she walked through the door, he looked at her face.

"You met Lauren."

Grace stopped.

"How did you know?"

Ethan didn't answer.

That was enough.

Again.

The silence.

The endless silence.

Grace closed the door behind her.

"How much did you know?"

Ethan looked away.

"About what?"

She laughed softly.

"Don't do that."

"What?"

"Don't pretend anymore."

Her voice became stronger.

"I am tired of asking questions and watching you decide what I deserve to know."

Ethan looked hurt.

But Grace continued.

"How much did you know about my grandmother?"

A long silence followed.

Then Ethan sat down.

"Everything."

The answer was devastating.

Not because she didn't expect it.

Because she hoped he would deny it.

Grace slowly nodded.

"Tell me."

Ethan rubbed his hands together.

"When I first met you, I didn't know about the inheritance."

She looked at him.

"Lauren said you did."

"I found out later."

"When?"

"About six months after we started dating."

Grace closed her eyes.

Six months.

"So my grandmother was right."

Ethan looked down.

"Grace..."

"Was I an opportunity?"

"No."

The answer came immediately.

But this time, Grace noticed something.

He wasn't saying it because it was true.

He was saying it because he needed it to be true.

"My father knew about your family before I did."

Ethan's voice was quiet.

Grace listened.

"He knew Walker Heritage Holdings still existed."

"How?"

"I don't know."

She stared at him.

"You don't know?"

"No."

Ethan looked frustrated.

"Richard Pierce had been searching for information about your grandmother's company for years."

"Why?"

"Because he believed she had something that could destroy him."

Grace froze.

"Destroy him?"

Ethan nodded.

"Your grandmother didn't just build a company."

"What did she build?"

"A record."

"A record of what?"

Ethan looked at her.

"Corruption."

The word felt heavy.

"Your grandmother discovered that several investors were manipulating real estate deals."

Grace listened carefully.

"Richard Pierce was involved."

Silence.

"Ethan..."

"I know."

"No."

Grace shook her head.

"You don't understand."

She stood.

"My grandmother spent her entire life protecting something."

She looked at him.

"And you helped the people who wanted it."

Ethan closed his eyes.

"I was trying to save my company."

"No."

Grace's voice became firm.

"You were trying to save yourself."

Then Ethan said something she didn't expect.

"I was going to tell you."

Grace looked at him.

"When?"

"After I fixed everything."

She smiled sadly.

"There it is again."

"What?"

"The same excuse."

A pause.

"You always planned to tell me after."

Ethan looked confused.

"What does that mean?"

"It means you never planned to stand beside me."

She pointed toward him.

"You planned to stand in front of me."

The words hit him.

Because they were true.

That evening, Grace met with her brothers again.

This time, she told them everything.

The inheritance.

The documents.

Richard Pierce.

The hidden company.

The betrayal.

James listened silently.

Michael took notes.

Daniel looked furious.

But none of them interrupted.

When she finished, James finally spoke.

"Grace."

"Yes?"

"There is something you need to know."

She looked at him.

"We found something too."

Michael placed a file on the table.

Grace opened it.

Inside was an old photograph.

Her grandmother.

A younger Richard Pierce.

And another person.

Grace froze.

Because she recognized the third person immediately.

"No."

James watched her.

"You know him?"

She stared at the picture.

Her hands trembling.

"That's..."

She couldn't finish.

Michael said quietly:

"Who?"

Grace whispered:

"My father."

Silence.

Her father.

A man who had died when she was young.

A man she remembered as kind.

Honest.

Gentle.

James looked at the photograph.

"Your father was involved?"

Grace shook her head.

"No."

But even she sounded uncertain.

Then something fell out of the file.

An old handwritten note.

Grace picked it up.

The handwriting.

Her grandmother's.

Again.

She read:

"Grace, if you ever discover the truth, remember this: betrayal does not always come from enemies. Sometimes it comes from the people closest to you."

Her breathing stopped.

Because underneath that sentence was one final line.

One line that changed everything.

"Your father tried to expose them before he died."

Grace dropped the paper.

Nobody moved.

Because suddenly the past and present connected.

Her grandmother.

Her father.

Ethan.

Richard Pierce.

All of them were connected by a secret that had lasted decades.

And now Grace finally understood.

Her marriage had not collapsed because of Lauren.

Lauren was only the beginning.

Ethan had entered her life carrying secrets.

But he wasn't the only one.

Someone else had been hiding the truth.

Someone much closer.

Someone Grace trusted.

Her family.

And before the night ended...

Grace Walker would discover the final betrayal.

May you like

The one that would change everything she believed about the people she loved.

To be continued...
