Chapter 4 - The Secrets Ethan BuriedThe house that once represented everything Grace believed in suddenly felt unfamiliar.

The walls were the same.

The furniture was the same.

The photographs from five years of marriage were still hanging exactly where she had placed them.

But something had changed.

Maybe it wasn't the house.

Maybe it was the truth finally entering it.

Grace sat on the edge of the living room sofa while Michael checked the small mark on her cheek again.

"It needs ice."

"I'm fine."

Michael looked at her.

"Grace."

She sighed.

"I know."

That was the problem.

She knew.

She had always known.

But knowing something and accepting it were two different things.

Across the room, Ethan stood beside Lauren.

James noticed.

Everything.

The way Ethan kept looking at Lauren for reassurance.

The way Lauren stood closer to him than someone who was "just a consultant" should.

The way Ethan never once walked toward Grace.

Not once.

And that told James more than any explanation could.

"Lauren."

She looked at him.

"Yes?"

"I think you should leave."

Her eyebrows lifted.

"I'm not leaving."

James stared at her.

"You misunderstood."

His voice remained calm.

"I'm not asking."

Ethan immediately stepped in.

"James, this is my house."

James looked at him.

"No."

A pause.

"This is Grace's home."

Ethan frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Michael answered.

"It means you seem to have forgotten whose life you walked into."

Ethan laughed bitterly.

"Are you serious? You're acting like I'm some criminal."

Daniel looked at him.

"Tonight you brought another woman into your pregnant wife's home."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"Then you put your hands on her."

Ethan's face changed.

"It was one mistake."

James stepped forward.

"No."

His voice was quiet.

"A mistake is forgetting an anniversary."

"A mistake is saying something hurtful when you're angry."

"A mistake is damaging a business relationship."

He looked directly at Ethan.

"Putting your hand on your wife is a choice."

The room went silent.

Even Ethan had no answer.

Lauren picked up her purse.

"I think everyone needs to calm down."

Grace looked at her.

For the first time all night, Lauren saw something different in Grace's eyes.

Not sadness.

Not pain.

Strength.

"You should go."

Lauren smiled slightly.

"You don't actually believe Ethan will choose you after this, do you?"

Daniel immediately turned.

But Grace stopped him.

"No."

Everyone looked at her.

Grace slowly stood.

Her hand rested over her stomach.

"I don't need him to choose me."

The sentence surprised everyone.

Especially Ethan.

Because for years, his biggest advantage had been believing Grace needed him.

"I spent five years choosing him."

Grace looked at Ethan.

"Even when he wasn't choosing me."

A pause.

"But I won't beg someone to love me."

Her voice shook.

"But I also won't allow someone to disrespect me."

Lauren stared at her.

The confidence she had carried all night was starting to disappear.

Because she expected Grace to break.

She expected tears.

She expected screaming.

She didn't expect this.

After Lauren left, the silence became heavier.

Ethan sat down.

For the first time, he looked tired.

Not sorry.

Tired.

"Grace."

She remained standing.

"I need to explain."

Michael gave a small laugh.

"That's usually what people say after they get caught."

Ethan ignored him.

"I know how this looks."

James interrupted.

"No."

He shook his head.

"You know how this looks because you know what you did."

Ethan looked frustrated.

"You don't know everything."

"Then tell us."

Nobody spoke.

Ethan looked around.

Three brothers.

One wife.

The people he had spent years avoiding.

Finally, he said:

"Walker Development is in trouble."

Grace blinked.

"What?"

Ethan looked at her.

"The company."

Her expression changed.

"What kind of trouble?"

"Financial trouble."

The words were quiet.

But they changed the room.

James crossed his arms.

"How bad?"

Ethan hesitated.

"Bad."

Michael immediately understood.

"How bad, Ethan?"

Ethan looked away.

"We're facing a major loss."

"How much?"

"Eight million."

Grace covered her mouth.

Eight million.

The number felt impossible.

"Ethan..."

"I was trying to fix it."

James stepped forward.

"With what?"

Silence.

Michael looked at him.

"With what, Ethan?"

Ethan didn't answer.

And that was when James understood.

"The Southgate acquisition."

Ethan looked up.

James nodded slowly.

"You weren't working on an opportunity."

"You were trying to save yourself."

Ethan said nothing.

Grace looked between them.

"What does that mean?"

Michael answered carefully.

"It means Ethan wasn't bringing Lauren into his life because of a business relationship."

James looked at Ethan.

"He was looking for investors."

A cold feeling moved through Grace.

"Lauren?"

Nobody answered.

But she already knew.

"She has money."

Ethan looked away.

That was enough.

Grace sat down slowly.

The pain in her chest wasn't jealousy anymore.

It was something worse.

Realization.

"You weren't leaving me for her."

Ethan looked at her.

"No."

She laughed quietly.

"You were using her."

"Grace—"

"Were you?"

Silence.

The truth didn't need words.

She looked down.

All those nights.

All those excuses.

All those "business dinners."

All those moments when she wondered if she wasn't enough.

Maybe it wasn't about love.

Maybe it was about desperation.

But that didn't make it better.

It made it worse.

Because Ethan didn't just betray her heart.

He risked their family's future.

Their baby's future.

James walked toward Ethan.

"You need to tell us everything."

"I don't need your help."

James looked at him.

"You called this help?"

"No."

Ethan stood.

"I mean I don't need you controlling my life."

Michael shook his head.

"You still don't understand."

"What?"

"You think we're here because we want control."

Michael pointed toward Grace.

"We're here because she finally admitted she needs protection."

Ethan looked at Grace.

And for the first time, he saw something he hadn't seen before.

Distance.

She wasn't waiting for him to fix things.

She wasn't waiting for an apology.

She was observing him.

Like she was deciding whether he was still someone worth saving.

That terrified him.

"Grace."

She looked up.

"Do you still love me?"

The question surprised everyone.

Even Ethan.

Because despite everything...

Some part of him still expected the answer he wanted.

Grace was quiet for a long time.

Then she said:

"I love the man I married."

A pause.

"But I don't know who you are anymore."

The words hit harder than anger.

Because anger meant there was still attachment.

This meant something was disappearing.

Later that night, after Ethan went upstairs to sleep in the guest room, the three brothers stayed with Grace.

Nobody wanted to leave her alone.

Not tonight.

Daniel sat beside her.

"You should have called us."

Grace looked down.

"I promised myself I would handle it."

James sighed.

"You always do that."

"Do what?"

"Carry things until they crush you."

Grace looked at him.

"I didn't want you to hate him."

James's expression softened.

"Grace."

He reached for her hand.

"We never wanted you to leave him."

"We wanted you to be happy."

She swallowed.

"I thought if I tried harder..."

Michael shook his head.

"No."

His voice was gentle.

"You don't save a marriage by becoming the only person fighting for it."

Grace looked at the ultrasound picture again.

The baby.

Her future.

For five years, she had protected Ethan.

Now she had to protect herself.

But she didn't know yet...

That Ethan Walker had hidden one more secret.

A secret far bigger than Lauren.

A secret that would change everything.

Because the financial crisis wasn't the only thing Ethan had been hiding.

And when Grace discovered the truth...

May you like

She would finally understand why he had been so desperate to keep everyone away from his business.

Including her.
