Chapter 3 - The Truth Hidden Behind Five Years of SilenceFor several seconds, nobody in the dining room moved.

The candles on the table continued burning.
The expensive dinner Grace had prepared sat untouched.
The anniversary flowers she had carefully arranged still stood perfectly in the center of the table.
Everything looked beautiful.
Everything looked like love.
Except the people standing inside it.
James Walker kept his eyes on Ethan.
He had seen many men try to explain away their mistakes.
He had seen criminals deny evidence.
He had seen executives lie under pressure.
But there was something different about Ethan's face.
It wasn't guilt.
It was panic.
Not because he had hurt Grace.
Because he had been caught.
And James noticed the difference.
"Grace," Michael said gently.
"Can you walk?"
She nodded.
But the second she tried to move, her body betrayed her.
The adrenaline that had kept her standing disappeared.
Daniel caught her arm immediately.
"Slowly."
"I'm okay."
Three voices answered at the same time.
"No, you're not."
Grace looked at them.
And for the first time that night, she almost smiled.
Because that was what she remembered.
Not Ethan's cold expression.
Not Lauren's confidence.
Her brothers.
The three people who had never asked her to be anything except herself.
Ethan stepped forward.
"Can we please stop acting like I attacked her for no reason?"
The room became still.
Daniel slowly turned around.
"What did you just say?"
Ethan lifted his hands.
"I'm not saying what happened was right."
James's expression darkened.
"But?"
Ethan sighed.
"But Grace pushed me."
Grace stared at him.
"What?"
"You were accusing Lauren. You were insulting her."
Michael looked at Ethan.
"Insulting her?"
"She came into my home on our anniversary."
Lauren immediately interrupted.
"Grace was emotional."
Daniel laughed once.
A cold, humorless sound.
"Emotional?"
He looked at Ethan.
"Your pregnant wife discovered you brought your affair partner into your house."
Lauren's expression changed.
"Affair partner?"
Nobody spoke.
But the silence confirmed it.
Daniel looked at Ethan.
"You didn't tell her?"
Ethan looked away.
That was enough.
Michael stepped closer.
"How long?"
Ethan didn't answer.
James's voice became sharper.
"How long have you been seeing her?"
"James—"
"Answer."
Ethan looked uncomfortable.
"Six weeks."
Grace closed her eyes.
Six weeks.
She had spent six weeks feeling something was wrong.
Six weeks telling herself she was imagining things.
Six weeks wondering why her husband barely touched her.
Six weeks wondering why he came home smelling like someone else.
And all that time...
He knew.
"Six weeks."
Grace repeated quietly.
Ethan looked at her.
"Grace, listen—"
"No."
She shook her head.
"You don't get to explain six weeks."
Her voice trembled.
"You don't get to explain why I sat alone eating dinner while you were with her."
She looked at Lauren.
"You don't get to explain why another woman knew more about my marriage than I did."
Lauren crossed her arms.
"I didn't steal anything."
Grace looked at her.
The sadness in her eyes was worse than anger.
"That's what people say when they know they took something."
Lauren's jaw tightened.
"You think Ethan is property?"
"No."
Grace answered immediately.
"I think commitment means something."
The room went quiet.
Because that was the thing about Grace.
Even when broken, she was still graceful.
Still fair.
Still kind.
And somehow that made Ethan look worse.
James walked toward the table.
His eyes fell on the cream-colored box.
He picked it up.
"What is this?"
Grace looked at it.
For a moment, she forgot.
The baby.
The ultrasound.
The surprise.
The reason she had spent all day cooking.
Her hand reached out.
"I was going to tell him tonight."
James opened the box carefully.
When he saw the picture inside, his face changed.
Michael looked over.
Daniel stepped closer.
None of them spoke.
Because suddenly everything became real.
There wasn't just a marriage falling apart.
There was a baby involved.
Their sister was pregnant.
And the man who promised to protect her had made her stand alone.
James placed the picture back into the box.
Then he looked at Ethan.
"You knew."
Ethan didn't respond.
James's voice lowered.
"You knew she was carrying your child."
"I was going to talk to her."
"When?"
Ethan hesitated.
"After tonight."
Michael frowned.
"After tonight?"
Ethan looked frustrated.
"You don't understand."
"No."
James nodded.
"We understand perfectly."
Ethan ran a hand through his hair.
"This marriage has been over for months."
Grace looked up.
That sentence hurt.
Not because it was true.
Because Ethan said it like it was a fact she should have accepted.
"You decided that alone?"
She asked.
Ethan didn't answer.
"You decided our marriage was over without telling me?"
"Grace, we both knew things weren't the same."
She stared at him.
"No."
Her voice was quiet.
"I knew you were busy."
"I knew your company needed you."
"I knew building your future required sacrifices."
She touched her stomach.
"But I didn't know I was sacrificing alone."
Nobody spoke.
Even Lauren had nothing to say.
Then James's phone rang.
Everyone looked at it.
He checked the screen.
His expression changed.
"Who is it?"
Michael asked.
James didn't answer immediately.
He stared at the name.
Then looked at Ethan.
"Interesting."
"What?"
James turned the phone around.
The name on the screen was:
Victor Reynolds.
Ethan's biggest investor.
Ethan's face changed instantly.
"Don't answer that."
James looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because this has nothing to do with him."
James smiled slightly.
The kind of smile that made people nervous.
"That's usually when it has everything to do with him."
He answered.
"Victor."
The room listened.
A few seconds passed.
Then James's expression hardened.
"You're sure?"
Pause.
"Tonight?"
Another pause.
"Send me everything."
He hung up.
Ethan looked angry.
"What was that?"
James looked at him.
"Something you should have told your wife."
"What?"
Michael watched carefully.
"James."
James ignored him.
"Ethan, how much money did Walker Development lose last quarter?"
Ethan froze.
Grace looked confused.
"What does that mean?"
Nobody answered.
James continued.
"Because Victor seems to believe you weren't at business meetings during those late nights."
Ethan's face became pale.
Lauren suddenly looked uncomfortable.
James noticed.
Of course he did.
"Apparently," James said slowly.
"Some of those meetings happened at hotels."
Grace looked at Ethan.
Her heart sank.
"No."
Ethan immediately responded.
"Grace, it's not what you think."
James laughed quietly.
"That sentence should be illegal."
Michael stepped forward.
"What else?"
James looked at his brothers.
Then at Grace.
"I think we need to have a family meeting."
Ethan shook his head.
"This is ridiculous."
"No."
James looked directly at him.
"What's ridiculous is that my sister spent five years protecting your reputation."
A pause.
"Tonight, we're going to find out whether you deserved it."
Grace looked at her brothers.
For years, she had feared calling them because she didn't want to destroy her marriage.
But standing there now...
She realized something.
She hadn't destroyed anything.
May you like
The truth had.
And the truth had finally arrived.
