Chapter 4 - THE COURTHOUSE STEPSThree months later, Khloe Harrington was eight months pregnant and no longer wearing her wedding ring.

The absence of it had become a quiet declaration.
She did not make public statements. She did not cry for cameras. She did not leak stories to gossip pages, though plenty had begged. Philadelphia society lived on whispers, and the Harrington divorce had become a feast.
Some said Khloe had lost her mind.
Some said Richard had hidden hundreds of millions.
Some said Vanessa Kensington had vanished to Europe.
Some said Harrison Cole had evidence powerful enough to bury the entire Harrington family.
Only one rumor was completely true.
Harrison had not even begun.
The first major hearing was scheduled at Montgomery County Courthouse on a gray Thursday morning. Reporters gathered early. So did attorneys, clerks, spectators, and wealthy people pretending they had business nearby.
Khloe arrived with Harrison, two security professionals, and a calm that cost her more than anyone knew.
Her navy maternity dress was simple. Her hair was pinned back. Her face was pale but composed.
Richard arrived ten minutes later with three lawyers and his father.
Edward Harrington looked carved from old money and disappointment. He did not look at Khloe’s stomach.
Richard did.
Only once.
Then he looked away.
Inside the courtroom, Harrison spoke for less than eight minutes.
He did not perform. He did not shout. He simply presented enough evidence to make the judge remove his glasses twice.
Invoices routed through Kensington Design.
Transfers to offshore entities.
Real estate held by companies Richard had denied controlling.
Communications suggesting a coordinated plan to reduce Khloe’s marital share before childbirth.
Richard’s attorneys objected repeatedly.
The judge overruled most of them.
By the time the hearing ended, Richard’s access to several accounts remained frozen, discovery expanded, and Vanessa Kensington was formally named a material witness.
Outside the courtroom, Richard cornered Harrison near the corridor.
“This is family business,” Richard said through clenched teeth.
Harrison looked at him. “You stopped being family when you made my sister a target.”
Richard’s eyes flicked toward Khloe. “You don’t know everything.”
“No,” Harrison said. “But I will.”
Edward stepped in smoothly. “Mr. Cole, men of our standing should avoid unnecessary destruction.”
Harrison turned to him.
“I agree.”
Edward’s expression relaxed a fraction.
Then Harrison added, “That’s why I’m being necessary.”
Khloe felt the hallway go quiet.
Harrison guided her away before Richard could respond.
They made it through the courthouse doors into the cold afternoon air.
That was when Vanessa appeared.
She stood near the top of the marble steps in a camel coat, sunglasses hiding half her face. She looked thinner than before. Sharper. Her beauty had become brittle.
Khloe stopped.
Harrison’s security moved immediately.
Vanessa lifted both hands. “I just want to talk.”
Harrison stepped between them. “You can speak to my office.”
Vanessa ignored him. Her attention locked on Khloe’s stomach.
“You think you won,” Vanessa said.
Khloe’s throat tightened. “I don’t think any of this is winning.”
Vanessa laughed, but it broke halfway through. “He told me you trapped him.”
Khloe flinched.
“He told me you used the baby because you knew he wanted to leave.”
Harrison’s voice cut in. “Walk away.”
Vanessa removed her sunglasses. Her eyes were red.
“He told me my baby mattered more.”
The words struck Khloe strangely.
“Your baby?” she whispered.
Vanessa’s lips trembled.
Then Richard’s voice sounded behind them.
“Vanessa. Stop.”
Everyone turned.
Richard stood at the courthouse doors, furious and pale.
Vanessa looked at him with hatred so pure it made Khloe step back.
“You said she was nothing,” Vanessa said.
“Not here.”
“You said you’d protect me.”
“Not here.”
“You said our child—”
“Vanessa.”
The warning in his voice was unmistakable.
Vanessa heard it.
So did Khloe.
The moment stretched thin.
Khloe put one protective hand over her belly and tried to move past her.
“I’m sorry,” Khloe said quietly. “But I can’t do this with you.”
Vanessa’s face twisted.
“Of course you’re sorry,” she whispered. “Women like you are always sorry while they take everything.”
Khloe turned.
“I didn’t take him from you.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with something wild.
“No,” she said. “You just wouldn’t disappear.”
Then she shoved.
The world became marble, air, screams, and Harrison’s voice tearing open.
Khloe did not remember hitting every step.
She remembered one thought.
My baby.
At the bottom, pain swallowed everything.
Harrison’s hands were on her face.
“Khloe. Look at me. Stay with me.”
She tried.
She truly tried.
“Harry…”
“The ambulance is coming.”
“The baby…”
“We’re saving both of you.”
“Please…”
Then the courthouse lights blurred.
At the top of the stairs, Vanessa stared at her own hands.
Richard did not move.
And Harrison Cole slowly raised his head.
He looked first at Vanessa.
Then at Richard.
Then at every security camera mounted around the courthouse entrance.
His sister’s blood was on his suit.
His palms were torn.

His voice, when he spoke, was almost quiet.
“Nobody leaves.”
