Chapter 17 - THE CUSTODY TRAPBy sunrise, the fake custody petition was everywhere.

The filing itself was sealed within hours, but the leak had already done its work. Headlines spread faster than corrections ever could.

Richard Harrington Seeks Access to Newborn Daughter After Wife’s Courthouse Fall.

Sources Say Harrison Cole Blocking Father From Premature Infant.

Pregnant Wife, Mistress, Billionaire Divorce: Who Gets Baby Grace?

Khloe read none of them.

Harrison made sure of that.

But Khloe heard enough from the way nurses lowered their voices and strangers glanced too long through hallway windows.

At 9:00 a.m., Judge Elaine Porter convened an emergency closed hearing.

Khloe appeared by video from the hospital. Pale. Seated upright. Grace’s incubator behind her like a silent witness.

Richard appeared in person with his attorney, looking furious and exhausted.

Harrison sat beside Khloe on-screen.

Judge Porter looked over her glasses.

“Mr. Harrington, did you authorize this petition?”

“No, Your Honor.”

“Did your counsel?”

“No, Your Honor,” Richard’s attorney said. “We became aware of it at approximately 3:18 this morning.”

The judge turned to Harrison.

“Mr. Cole?”

Harrison’s voice was smooth. “The filing is fraudulent, strategically leaked, and designed to harass a recovering mother while manufacturing public sympathy for a man under investigation.”

Richard flinched.

The judge looked back at him.

“Mr. Harrington, do you seek access to the child?”

Silence.

Khloe’s breath caught.

This was the trap.

If Richard said yes, he looked like Lydia’s puppet and Khloe’s enemy.

If he said no, he looked like the same cold husband who stood still at the courthouse.

Richard looked at the screen.

At Khloe.

For a moment, the courtroom fell away.

“I want to see my daughter,” he said quietly. “But not like this.”

Khloe’s eyes filled despite herself.

Richard continued, “I will not pursue access until Khloe’s doctors agree it is safe, until the criminal investigation clarifies security concerns, and until the court determines appropriate conditions. I did not file that petition. I will not benefit from it.”

Harrison studied him.

Judge Porter nodded slowly.

“That was the first sensible sentence I’ve heard in this matter.”

Harrison said nothing.

The fake petition was dismissed. A forensic review was ordered. All future filings required direct counsel verification. A gag order expanded.

But the damage outside the courtroom continued.

Lydia had not needed to win legally.

She had needed to muddy the moral water.

That afternoon, Khloe asked to speak with Richard.

Harrison said no.

Khloe said yes.

The meeting happened through glass.

Richard stood on one side of a hospital security partition. Khloe sat on the other in a wheelchair.

Neither touched the phone for several seconds.

Then Khloe picked up.

Richard did too.

“You look better,” he said.

“Don’t do that.”

He closed his mouth.

She looked at him for a long moment.

“Did you love me?”

The question hit harder than accusation.

Richard lowered his eyes.

“Yes.”

“When did you stop?”

He swallowed.

“I don’t know.”

“That’s worse than a date.”

“I know.”

Khloe’s voice trembled. “I begged God for that baby. I begged through needles and losses and birthdays where I smiled at other people’s children until my face hurt. And while I was doing that, you were building another life with someone who laughed at my grief.”

Richard’s eyes reddened.

“I let cruelty make me feel powerful because I was too cowardly to admit I hated myself.”

Khloe looked away.

“I don’t forgive you.”

“I’m not asking.”

“But I don’t want Grace raised inside revenge either.”

He looked up.

“You will not use her to repair yourself,” Khloe said. “You will not make her responsible for proving you can be decent. You will not perform fatherhood for judges, cameras, or your own guilt.”

Richard nodded slowly.

“If you ever see her,” Khloe continued, “it will be because it is good for her. Not because it hurts me. Not because it saves you.”

“I understand.”

“I don’t think you do. But maybe someday you can.”

The call ended.

Richard remained standing after Khloe rolled away.

Harrison watched from the corridor.

For the first time, he saw something in Richard that was not strategy.

Not enough to matter yet.

But enough to complicate hatred.

That evening, federal agents traced the fake custody petition to a legal courier account registered under the name Amelia Grant.

Harrison stood very still when he heard.

Lydia had used a dead woman’s name.

Evelyn said, “She wants you emotional.”

Harrison’s face was colder than she had ever seen it.

“No,” he said. “She wants me personal.”

“And?”

May you like

He picked up his coat.

“She succeeded.”
