Chapter 14 - The Seventh Man

Vivian Cross knew exactly where to strike.

Not at the wound everyone could see.

At the one Caleb had hidden so deep it had become part of his bones.

Because the moment he signed, I left him behind, his whole body changed.

He was no longer in the basement.

He was back in smoke and fire.

Back where sound ended.

Back where men moved their mouths and no noise came out.

Lily saw the collapse coming before the monitor showed it.

His breathing sped. His pupils widened. His fingers clawed at the blanket.

Vivian smiled.

“There he is. The unstable witness.”

Agent Reese’s jaw tightened.

Lily stepped directly into Caleb’s line of sight.

Look at me.

His eyes did not focus.

Caleb. Look at me.

Nothing.

The armed men watched, confused by the silence, but Vivian understood enough to wait.

Lily did the only thing she knew might reach him.

She used the field code.

Not ASL.

Not hospital signs.

The old silent language of dust, blood, and survival.

Anchor. Identify safe point.

Caleb’s eyes snapped to her.

Vivian’s smile faded.

Lily continued.

You are not there. You are here. Count exits.

Caleb’s gaze moved.

Elevator.

Laundry door.

Maintenance hall.

Stairwell.

His breathing slowed by one fraction.

Lily signed.

Count allies.

His eyes moved again.

Lily.

Reese.

Patel.

One agent.

Second agent.

His jaw unclenched.

Vivian’s voice cut through.

“You cannot code him out of guilt.”

Lily looked at her.

“No. But I can keep you from using it as a leash.”

Vivian’s man shifted the detonator.

Agent Reese said, “What is that wired to?”

Vivian’s smile returned.

“Nothing dramatic. Just the oxygen storage alarm system. Enough chaos to move a patient.”

Dr. Patel hissed, “You would endanger an entire hospital?”

Vivian looked bored.

“This hospital endangered itself when it kept records.”

Caleb lifted one shaking hand.

The seventh man was alive.

Everyone turned.

Vivian’s eyes narrowed.

Caleb signed slowly, forcing each word through pain.

Petty Officer Lane. Trapped. I went back. Door collapsed. Command ordered retreat.

Lily translated, voice tight.

Caleb’s eyes never left Vivian.

I disobeyed. Tried again. Acheron team pulled me out. Sedated me.

Vivian’s face hardened.

When I woke, Lane was listed dead. Body unrecovered.

Lily felt the pieces shift.

Not cowardice.

Suppression.

Vivian had turned Caleb’s worst memory into a weapon because the truth behind it was worse for her.

“Lane saw something,” Lily said.

Vivian’s eyes flicked to her.

There it was.

Caleb signed.

Lane found kits. Filmed labels. Acheron.

Agent Reese whispered, “The missing body was a missing witness.”

Vivian’s voice went cold.

“Enough.”

She nodded to one of the men.

He moved toward Caleb.

Lily stepped in front of the stretcher.

The man grabbed her arm.

Caleb moved like lightning.

Even injured, strapped, exhausted, he caught the man’s wrist and twisted. The weapon clattered to the floor.

Agent Reese drew his gun.

The basement erupted.

Dr. Patel yanked Lily backward. One agent tackled the man with the detonator. The device skidded beneath a laundry cart.

Vivian ran.

Lily saw her move toward the maintenance hall.

No one else did.

Everyone was focused on the armed men.

Lily ran after her.

“Lily!” Reese shouted.

But Lily was already through the door.

The maintenance hall was narrow and hot, pipes sweating overhead. Vivian moved fast in heels, fury making her elegant mask crack.

Lily caught her at the stairwell.

Vivian turned with a small blade in her hand.

“You should have taken the offer.”

Lily stopped just out of reach.

“You should have stayed gone.”

“I was never gone,” Vivian snapped. “I was promoted.”

She lunged.

Lily dodged, but the blade caught her sleeve and sliced skin beneath.

Pain flashed hot.

Vivian lunged again.

This time Lily caught her wrist with both hands.

The old training returned with terrifying clarity.

Leverage.

Turn.

Drop.

Vivian hit the concrete hard.

The blade spun away.

Lily pinned her.

Breathing hard.

Bleeding.

Done hiding.

Vivian laughed beneath her.

“You think this ends with me?”

Lily leaned close.

“No.”

Agent Reese burst through the door, weapon raised.

May you like

Lily looked down at Vivian Cross.

“It starts with you.”
