Chapter 8 - The Choice at DawnBy dawn, every phone connected to Alessandro Moretti was ringing.

Politicians called first.

Then lawyers.

Then men who owned trucking companies, restaurants, construction firms, unions, nightclubs, private security outfits, and pieces of buildings they pretended not to own.

Rumors spread faster than facts.

Marco Bellini had betrayed him.

Claudia Bellini had helped.

An old warehouse had become a battlefield.

A maid and her child had been taken.

Bruno had broken through a kennel door and led Moretti’s men across the city.

By breakfast, half of Chicago believed Alessandro had burned three blocks to the ground.

He had not.

That restraint worried his enemies more than fire would have.

Sophia and Emma were taken back to the estate under medical supervision. Dr. Hale examined Bruno first because Emma refused to let anyone touch her until “Bruno’s ouchie” was checked.

The old dog had torn muscles, cracked a tooth, reopened scars along his gums, and worsened the injury in his hip.

“He needs surgery,” Dr. Hale said quietly.

Emma’s lip trembled.

“Will he be okay?”

The veterinarian looked at Alessandro.

That was a mistake.

Emma caught it.

“Don’t look at him. Tell me.”

Richard Hale blinked.

Alessandro almost smiled despite everything.

“He can recover,” Richard said gently. “But he needs rest. Real rest.”

Emma nodded solemnly. “I will tell him.”

“Good,” Richard said. “He listens to you.”

“He listens when people are not stupid.”

Sophia covered her face with one hand.

Alessandro turned away, shoulders moving once with silent amusement.

For a few hours, it almost seemed possible to breathe.

Then the federal agents arrived.

Three black vehicles came through the front gate at 9:40 a.m. They parked with official arrogance in front of the main entrance. Five agents stepped out, led by a woman in a navy coat and flat shoes, silver hair pulled into a severe knot.

Special Agent Maren Walsh.

Alessandro knew her.

Everyone in his world knew her.

She had spent nine years trying to build a case strong enough to bring him down and had failed every time.

Now Marco’s leaked files had given her a door.

Alessandro met her in the foyer.

“Agent Walsh.”

“Mr. Moretti.”

Her eyes flicked to the bandage on his knuckles.

“Rough night?”

“Busy.”

“So I hear.”

Behind her, agents fanned out with warrants.

Enzo stepped forward, furious. “This is harassment.”

Walsh handed him papers. “This is federal procedure.”

Alessandro read the first page.

Then the second.

Financial records. Security logs. Communications. Warehouse ownership. Staff access. Medical room. Private offices.

Marco had known exactly where to aim.

Walsh watched him. “You look less surprised than I expected.”

“I employ disappointing people.”

“You employed a man who kidnapped a woman and a child.”

“I detained that man.”

“After he betrayed you.”

Alessandro looked up.

Walsh did not flinch.

“You understand the difference, Mr. Moretti. Legally, morally, publicly.”

Sophia stood at the top of the stairs holding Emma.

She should have stayed away. She knew that. But when strange voices filled the foyer and Bruno was in surgery and Alessandro stood below like a man surrounded by knives, she had come.

Agent Walsh saw her.

Her expression changed.

Not soft.

Aware.

“You’re Sophia Carter?”

Sophia descended slowly. “Yes.”

“I’d like to speak with you.”

Alessandro’s jaw tightened.

Sophia noticed.

Agent Walsh noticed too.

“I can answer questions,” Sophia said.

“Privately.”

“No.”

Both women looked at Alessandro.

He said it quietly, but it landed hard.

Walsh raised an eyebrow. “You don’t decide that.”

Sophia lifted her chin.

“He doesn’t,” she said. “I do.”

Alessandro turned toward her.

She met his gaze.

“I’ll speak with her in the breakfast room. Emma stays with Paula. The door stays open.”

Walsh studied Sophia, then nodded. “Acceptable.”

Alessandro did not like it.

Sophia could tell.

But he stepped aside.

That mattered.

In the breakfast room, Agent Walsh asked careful questions. Sophia answered what she knew. The photograph. The call. Claudia’s threat. Marco’s confession. The warehouse. Bruno.

Walsh wrote almost nothing down.

That made Sophia nervous.

Finally, the agent closed her notebook.

“Do you understand what happened to you last night?”

“I was kidnapped.”

“Yes. But not only that.” Walsh’s voice lowered. “You became evidence.”

Sophia’s hands went cold.

“Against him?”

“Against everyone.” Walsh glanced toward the open door, where Alessandro’s silhouette stood in the hall. “Marco Bellini sent files. Some are real. Some may be altered. Either way, the city is about to move. Federal agencies, local police, rival organizations, politicians trying to save themselves. Moretti’s empire is going to fracture.”

Sophia looked toward the hall.

“He saved us.”

“I believe that.”

“Then why are you here?”

“Because saving you doesn’t erase what he built.”

Sophia had no answer.

Walsh leaned forward.

“I can put you and your daughter in protection today.”

Sophia’s breath caught.

“Witness protection?”

“Emergency relocation first. New housing. New school when the time comes. Distance from all of this.”

The offer should have felt like rescue.

Instead, Sophia thought of Emma crying for Bruno. Bruno in surgery. Alessandro standing in the warehouse snow with her child in his arms.

Then she thought of Marco’s words.

Every enemy you have knows there’s a little girl in a red coat.

“If I leave,” Sophia said, “are we safe?”

Walsh was silent.

That was answer enough.

The breakfast room door moved slightly.

Alessandro stood outside, not entering, not interfering.

For once, power waited on Sophia Carter’s choice.

She looked back at Agent Walsh.

“I want my daughter safe,” she said. “But I’m done letting men move us like furniture.”

Walsh nodded slowly.

“Then decide carefully.”

Sophia stood.

“I will.”

Outside, Alessandro stepped away from the wall.

“What did she offer you?”

Sophia almost said, None of your business.

Instead, she said, “A way out.”

His face did not change.

“You should take it.”

The words startled her.

“You mean that?”

“Yes.”

Emma appeared at the end of the hall, holding Mr. Buttons by one arm.

“Mommy! Bruno woke up!”

Sophia turned instantly.

Alessandro stayed where he was.

For a moment, he looked almost unbearably alone.

Sophia saw then what she had not allowed herself to see.

He wanted them to stay.

May you like

And because he wanted it, he told them to leave.

That was the first honest thing she trusted about him.
