Chapter 2 - The Cameras Don’t Cry

The maternity floor did not smell like power.
It smelled like antiseptic, warm blankets, and fear people tried to hide behind polite voices.
Marcus hated it immediately.
He had built towers of glass and steel. He had walked into boardrooms where billion-dollar decisions were made over black coffee. He had bought companies, broken partnerships, and sat across from men who believed intimidation was a language.
But none of that mattered when he stood outside an examination room listening to machines search for his child’s heartbeat.
Elias stood beside him, one hand in his pocket, the other holding his phone.
“She is conscious,” Elias said. “That matters.”
Marcus stared at the closed door. “Is the baby—”
“They are checking now.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“No,” Elias said quietly. “It is the only honest one I can give you.”
Marcus turned away and pressed both hands against the wall. His shoulders rose once, then fell. He did not cry. He did not shout. But Elias saw the effort it took him to remain standing.
“You need to breathe,” Elias said.
Marcus laughed once without humor. “Don’t tell me to breathe.”
“I’m not saying it for you. I’m saying it because when she asks for you, she needs to see you steady.”
That reached him.
Marcus closed his eyes.
For years, the public had made a legend out of his control. Marcus Thorne, the billionaire who never flinched. Marcus Thorne, the man who could lose millions before lunch and still smile through an interview. Marcus Thorne, the husband high society whispered was too powerful to be betrayed.
But the truth was simple.
He was a man outside a hospital room, terrified for his wife and unborn child.
Inside the room, Khloe stared at the ceiling while a nurse moved the monitor across her stomach. Her body ached in places she could not separate. Every sound seemed too loud. Every second stretched longer than the one before it.
Please, she thought. Please.
Then the room filled with a rapid, fluttering rhythm.
The heartbeat.
Khloe covered her mouth.
The nurse smiled, relief softening her face. “There we are.”
Khloe cried quietly then, not from pain, but from a kind of terror finally loosening its grip.
The doctor leaned closer. “Baby’s heart rate is present. We still need observation and imaging. You’re going to stay here, and we’re going to monitor you closely.”
Khloe nodded.
“Can my husband come in?”
Before the doctor answered, the door opened and Marcus appeared.
No one had told him.
He had simply heard the heartbeat through the door.
His face changed when he saw her.
The room around them seemed to fall away.
He came to her bedside and took her hand. “I heard.”
Khloe tried to smile, but it broke into tears.
“He’s still here,” she whispered.
Marcus bent and pressed his forehead to her hand.
“So are you,” he said.
For several minutes, there was no Isabella, no gala, no scandal. Only the monitor’s rhythm and the fragile miracle of stillness after violence.
Then Elias entered.
His expression told Marcus everything.
“You have it?” Marcus asked.
Elias nodded. “Security has the footage.”
Khloe’s eyes opened wider.
“Every angle?” Marcus asked.
“Enough.”
Elias looked at Khloe. “Sweetheart, I need you to know something before this becomes public.”
Khloe’s voice was thin. “What?”
“Isabella lied before we even moved you upstairs. She told two staff members you attacked her first.”
Marcus’s grip tightened.
Khloe closed her eyes, exhausted and unsurprised. “Of course she did.”
“She also called someone from the hallway,” Elias continued. “We don’t know who yet.”
“Her father,” Marcus said.
Elias looked at him.
Marcus’s jaw set. “Antonio Rossi.”
The name carried weight.
Antonio Rossi owned luxury hotels, shipping contracts, political friendships, and a reputation for making problems disappear behind elegant doors. He and Marcus had once shared business interests before Marcus quietly removed himself from a deal that smelled wrong.
Isabella had not entered Marcus’s life by accident.
That realization moved across Marcus’s face like a shadow.
Khloe saw it.
“What is it?” she asked.
Marcus hesitated.
Then he told the truth.
“Her father wanted access to my East Harbor development. I refused him last year. Isabella started appearing at events after that.”
Khloe stared at him.
“For weeks, I thought she was just trying to embarrass me,” Khloe whispered. “You knew her family wanted something?”
“I knew Antonio did,” Marcus said. “I did not know she would come after you.”
Khloe pulled her hand back.
The movement hurt more than he expected.
“Khloe—”
“She humiliated me in public,” Khloe said, her voice shaking now. “She touched your arm in front of cameras. She whispered things when no one could hear. She made me feel crazy for noticing.”
Marcus flinched.
“I should have stopped it.”
“Yes,” Khloe said.
It was not loud.
That made it worse.
Elias stepped back, giving them space without leaving.
Marcus looked at his wife, and for once, there was no polished answer available to him.
“You’re right,” he said. “I saw enough to know it bothered you. I told myself ignoring her would make it harmless. I was wrong.”
Khloe looked away.
The monitor continued its steady rhythm.
“I needed you to protect our peace before she ever touched me,” Khloe said.
Marcus bowed his head.
“I know.”
Outside the room, hospital legal counsel arrived with a tablet. Elias stepped into the hallway.
The footage loaded without sound first.
It showed Khloe entering the suite alone. Isabella arrived twelve minutes later. The hallway camera captured her looking both ways before slipping inside.
Then the room camera began.
Elaine stood behind Elias, one hand over her mouth.
There was Khloe backing away.
Isabella moving forward.
The shove.
The table.
The glass.
The kick.
Elaine turned away, horrified.
Elias did not.
He watched every second, his face carved from stone.
When the video ended, the legal counsel whispered, “We need police here immediately.”
“They’re on the way,” Elias said.
“Dr. Mercer,” Elaine said carefully, “there’s another problem.”
Elias looked up.
Elaine held out her phone.
A headline was already spreading across social media.
BILLIONAIRE’S PREGNANT WIFE IN VIOLENT ALTERCATION AT CHARITY GALA
Under it was a blurry photograph of Isabella in the hallway, crying into her phone.
The caption read:
Sources say Khloe Thorne attacked longtime family friend Isabella Rossi after a jealous confrontation.
Elaine’s face was pale.
“She’s already leaking the lie,” she said.
Elias looked toward Khloe’s hospital room.
Inside, Marcus was still standing beside his wife, trying to repair a trust he had not realized was already wounded.
Elias took Elaine’s phone and stared at the headline.
Then he said the one thing Isabella Rossi had not counted on.
“Good.”
Elaine blinked. “Good?”
May you like
Elias’s eyes hardened.
“Now when the truth comes out, everyone will see exactly who lied first.”
