Chapter 9 - Red Pine

The raid on Red Pine began before dawn.

Evelyn was not supposed to be there.

Everyone told her that.

Adrian told her twice.

Margaret told her once, which mattered more.

Even Lily, half-asleep and curled beneath a quilt, had touched Evelyn’s sleeve and whispered, “Don’t go away.”

Evelyn kissed her forehead.

“I am coming back before breakfast.”

Lily studied her face like she was trying to decide whether promises could be trusted again.

“Pink promise?”

Evelyn wrapped her smallest finger around Lily’s.

“Pink promise.”

Then she left before the guilt could stop her.

Red Pine sat behind two miles of private road, hidden by timber, snow, and old political favors. From above, it looked like a retreat center. Rustic cabins. A central lodge. Satellite dishes disguised as weather equipment.

From the ground, it looked like a place built by men who expected screams not to travel.

The federal team moved in silent formation.

Meridian security cut the external power.

Adrian’s unit blocked the road.

Local law enforcement, carefully selected and externally supervised, held the perimeter.

Evelyn entered through the east service door behind two agents.

Inside, Red Pine smelled like bleach and coffee.

Rooms had been cleared in a hurry. Drawers hung open. Paper had been burned in metal bins. Someone had known they were coming.

But not soon enough.

They found servers still warm.

They found passports in names that did not exist.

They found shipment logs tied to medical aid, emergency drones, and encrypted radios.

Then they found Rosa.

She was locked in a storage office beneath the lodge, weak but alive, wrapped in a coat that was not hers.

When Evelyn knelt in front of her, Rosa stared as if she were seeing a ghost.

“Mrs. Carlisle?”

“I’m here.”

Rosa began to cry.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just a broken, exhausted sound.

“I tried to get to Lily,” she said. “I tried. They told me if I talked, they would say I hurt her. They had pictures. They made me sign—”

Evelyn took her hand.

“You are safe now.”

Rosa shook her head.

“No. He has another place.”

Evelyn went still.

“Who?”

“Mr. Carlisle.” Rosa swallowed painfully. “He came here two nights ago. He said Red Pine was burned. He said the girl ruined everything.”

“What girl?”

Rosa looked at her.

“Lily.”

Evelyn’s chest tightened.

“He said he needed the original drive,” Rosa continued. “The one hidden in the house. The one with the real ownership files.”

Evelyn stood.

Adrian appeared in the doorway.

He had heard.

“Margaret,” Evelyn said into comms. “Lock down the house.”

No answer.

Static.

“Margaret, respond.”

Nothing.

Adrian’s face changed.

Evelyn tried Lily’s room camera.

The feed was black.

A message appeared on her phone from Grant.

YOU TOOK MY EMPIRE. I’LL TAKE YOURS.

Attached was a photo.

Lily’s stuffed rabbit lying on the floor of Margaret’s hallway.

For one second, Evelyn’s training vanished.

The room, the agents, the mission, the cold—all of it fell away.

There was only the rabbit.

Then Adrian grabbed her arm.

“Eve.”

She looked at him.

Her eyes were empty of panic now.

That frightened him more.

“Get me a helicopter,” she said.
