Chapter 6 - THE ENVELOPENo one touched the envelope for several seconds.

It lay on Khloe’s hospital tray between a plastic cup of ice water and a folded discharge pamphlet, looking impossibly ordinary for something that had just changed the temperature of the room.

Harrison stared at Eleanor Harrington’s handwriting.

Richard.

Elegant. Controlled. Familiar to anyone who had ever received one of Eleanor’s handwritten charity invitations.

Khloe looked from the envelope to Charles.

“After my accident?” she asked.

Charles swallowed. “That was the phrase on the folder.”

Harrison’s eyes lifted. “Folder?”

Charles nodded. “There were several documents. I brought what I could take without Eleanor noticing.”

“Why?” Harrison asked.

Charles looked at Khloe, not Harrison.

“Because I have spent years choosing peace over truth,” he said. “And today I saw what that peace cost.”

Khloe’s face softened for half a second, then hardened again. “Open it.”

Harrison picked it up carefully by the edges. Lawyer first, brother second, always aware that evidence could be destroyed by emotion.

Inside were six pages.

The first was a contact list.

PR consultant. Crisis attorney. Private investigator. Family court judge’s former clerk. Two journalists. One social media strategist.

The second page made Harrison’s expression go blank.

It was a narrative outline.

Khloe unstable due to fertility trauma.

History of emotional confrontations.

Possible self-inflicted fall during argument.

Vanessa acted in fear.

Richard devastated but concerned for unborn child.

Seek emergency custody if baby survives.

Khloe read the words over Harrison’s shoulder.

If baby survives.

The room tilted.

Not physically. The monitors remained steady. The fluorescent lights kept buzzing. Rain kept tapping against the window.

But something inside Khloe shifted so violently that she felt separate from the woman she had been that morning.

Richard had not only betrayed her.

He had prepared to take her son.

Her hands curled around the blanket. “They were going to say I threw myself down the stairs.”

Charles lowered his head. “Yes.”

Harrison turned the page.

The third document was worse.

Draft Petition for Emergency Custody.

It had been prepared before the courthouse hearing.

Before Vanessa touched Khloe.

Before the fall.

Before the ambulance.

Richard Harrington, petitioner, respectfully requests emergency custody of the minor child upon birth due to concerns regarding the mother’s mental instability, erratic conduct, and possible danger to herself and the child.

Harrison read the paragraph twice.

Then he looked at Charles.

“When was this drafted?”

“I don’t know.”

Harrison checked the footer.

Two weeks earlier.

Khloe made a sound like her breath had been stolen.

Two weeks earlier, Richard had kissed her stomach before leaving for work.

Two weeks earlier, he had smiled when the baby kicked under his palm.

Two weeks earlier, he had told her, “No matter what happens between us, I’ll always protect our son.”

Harrison set the papers down.

His voice was soft. “Lena needs this.”

Charles nodded. “Take it.”

“Do you understand what that means for your family?”

Charles looked at the sleeping city beyond the glass.

“I think my family ended today.”

The door opened before anyone could answer.

A nurse stepped in. “Mrs. Harrington, your blood pressure is rising. We need to keep things calm.”

Harrison immediately gathered the papers and stepped back.

Khloe took a slow breath.

Then another.

Her son moved beneath her hands.

She focused on that.

Not Richard. Not Vanessa. Not Eleanor. Not the words if baby survives.

Only her baby.

“I’m calm,” she said.

But Harrison knew her.

Khloe was not calm.

She was becoming something else.

By morning, the envelope was in Detective Ortiz’s hands.

By noon, Vanessa Kensington’s charges were upgraded.

By 3 p.m., a judge granted a temporary protective order barring Richard and Vanessa from contacting Khloe directly.

By 5 p.m., Harrison Cole filed an emergency motion freezing all marital assets.

By 6:15 p.m., Richard Harrington learned his accounts were locked while trying to pay for a second crisis PR firm.

He called Malcolm Price in a rage.

“He can’t do this!”

“He did.”

“I need access.”

“You have access to personal funds. Not marital accounts currently under dispute.”

“That money is mine.”

Malcolm sighed. “That attitude is why you’re in this position.”

Richard paced his office, blinds drawn, television muted on a news segment about the courthouse incident.

Vanessa’s mugshot had leaked.

So had his name.

Not officially from the police. Not from Harrison. The internet had done what the internet always did. Someone had filmed the ambulance. Someone had recognized him. Someone had connected Khloe to Harrison Cole.

Now strangers were calling him a monster in comment sections.

Richard threw the remote at the wall.

The screen cracked but did not go black.

Vanessa called from county holding.

He almost ignored it.

Then he answered.

“Get me out,” she whispered.

“I’m trying.”

“You promised I wouldn’t be alone.”

Richard closed his eyes. “Vanessa—”

“No. Don’t Vanessa me. They showed me the footage. They’re saying Khloe never touched me.”

“Stick to the story.”

“What story? Your mother’s story? The unstable wife? They found papers, Richard.”

His eyes opened.

“What papers?”

“I don’t know. My attorney said the DA has new documents.”

Richard went cold.

Across town, Eleanor Harrington sat alone in her sitting room, staring at the open drawer in her desk.

The envelope was gone.

For the first time in many years, Eleanor felt something she despised.

Panic.

She picked up her phone and called her private investigator.

“Find Charles,” she said.

Then she made a second call.

This one to Richard.

When he answered, she did not say hello.

“Your father betrayed us.”

Richard’s mouth went dry.

“What did he take?”

“The custody draft.”

Richard sank into his chair.

The room seemed to shrink around him.

Eleanor continued, voice ice-calm again. “Listen to me carefully. From this moment forward, your father is not family. Khloe is not family. The child is not family unless we win.”

Richard stared at the broken television, Vanessa’s mugshot frozen across the cracked screen.

“And if we don’t?” he asked.

Eleanor’s silence was worse than an answer.

Then she said, “Then Harrison Cole will make sure there is nothing left of you to save.”
