Chapter 5 - The Daycare PhotographClaire did not scream.

She could not.

Fear locked her body so completely that for several seconds she sat frozen in the back seat of Nathan Whitfield’s SUV, staring at the photograph of her daughter’s daycare entrance.

The image was grainy but clear enough.

The blue door.

The painted handprints on the window.

The little sign that read Bright Steps Learning Center.

Claire knew exactly where the photographer had stood. Across the street, beside the bus stop. Close enough to watch parents come and go. Close enough to learn the schedule.

Lily slept against her chest, unaware that someone had turned her small life into a threat.

The driver glanced in the rearview mirror.

“Ms. Morgan?”

Claire’s voice barely worked.

“Turn around.”

The driver hesitated. “Mr. Whitfield instructed—”

“Turn around right now.”

He heard something in her voice and obeyed.

Claire called Nathan before she could think better of it.

He answered on the first ring.

“Claire?”

“She sent me a photo.”

Silence.

Claire looked out the window as the SUV swung back toward the estate.

“Of Lily’s daycare.”

Nathan’s breathing changed.

“Are you still in the car?”

“Yes.”

“Come back. Do not go home.”

“I know.”

“I’m calling Owen.”

Nathan hung up.

Claire held the phone in one hand and Lily in the other, feeling suddenly foolish for ever believing she could outrun people with money, connections, and no shame.

By the time the SUV returned through the west gate, the estate had transformed.

Security lights illuminated the driveway. Two additional guards stood near the side entrance. Owen was already outside, phone pressed to his ear, his face grim.

Nathan appeared behind him.

Still holding the rabbit.

Claire stepped out before the driver could open her door.

She handed Nathan the phone without speaking.

He looked at the messages.

Something dark moved across his face.

Not anger exactly.

Anger was loud.

This was quieter.

More dangerous.

Owen read over his shoulder.

“We need to preserve the number, screenshots, metadata if possible.”

Claire pulled Lily closer. “Can someone get to her daycare?”

Owen nodded. “I’ll put two people there tonight. Discreetly.”

“No,” Claire said sharply. “Not discreetly. Visible. I want whoever took that picture to know adults are watching.”

Nathan looked at Owen.

“Do it.”

Owen moved away.

Claire turned to Nathan.

“This is my fault.”

“No.”

“I let her near you.”

Nathan’s eyes flashed.

“Do not make Vanessa’s cruelty your responsibility.”

Claire gave a broken laugh.

“That is easy to say when you have security guards and lawyers.”

Nathan took that too.

He deserved it, maybe.

Or maybe he didn’t.

Claire was too scared to care.

Mrs. Alvarez rushed in with blankets and warm milk for Lily. She guided Claire toward a smaller sitting room off the kitchen instead of the grand rooms in the main wing. The familiar smell of coffee, lemon polish, and baked bread steadied Claire more than the velvet furniture ever could.

Lily woke when Claire lowered her onto a sofa.

“Mommy?”

“I’m here.”

Lily looked around, confused.

“Where home?”

“We’re staying here tonight.”

Lily’s face crumpled. “I want my yellow blanket.”

Claire pressed her forehead to Lily’s. “I know, baby.”

Nathan stood in the doorway, listening as if each word added to the debt he had created.

“I can have someone get it,” he said.

Claire shook her head. “No one goes to my apartment tonight.”

Owen returned twenty minutes later with updates.

“Daycare has been notified through the director’s emergency line. She’s cooperating. Two guards are posted outside in marked private security jackets. Local police have been informed of a possible stalking threat involving a minor.”

Claire exhaled shakily.

“And the number?”

“Burner,” Owen said. “But we’re tracing what we can.”

Nathan’s phone rang again.

This time, he looked at the caller and his mouth tightened.

“Malcolm Hale.”

Claire stood immediately. “Put it on speaker.”

Nathan hesitated.

“I want to hear,” she said.

He answered and placed the phone on the table.

Malcolm’s voice filled the room.

“Nathan, this has gone far enough.”

Nathan said nothing.

Malcolm continued, smoother now. “Vanessa is emotional. She feels betrayed. But there is no need to escalate this into a legal war. We can manage the story.”

Claire’s hands curled into fists.

Nathan’s voice remained calm. “Did your daughter send threats to Claire Morgan?”

A pause.

“I don’t know what you mean.”

“She received messages from an unknown number, including a photograph of her daughter’s daycare.”

Another pause.

Longer.

When Malcolm spoke again, the warmth was gone.

“You should be careful, Nathan.”

Owen straightened.

Nathan leaned one hand on the table.

“Is that advice or a confession?”

“It is reality. You are risking your reputation over a woman whose background you clearly do not understand.”

Claire felt sick.

Nathan glanced at her.

“Then enlighten me.”

Malcolm’s voice lowered.

“Ask her about Daniel Reyes’s brother.”

Claire froze.

Nathan saw it.

So did Owen.

Malcolm continued, “Ask her why a man named Mateo Reyes has been looking for her for three years. Ask her what kind of family that little girl really comes from.”

Claire could not breathe.

Nathan looked at her, but not with judgment.

With alarm.

Malcolm said softly, “You are not protecting a helpless mother. You are inviting a dangerous history into your home.”

The call ended.

The room went cold.

Claire sat down slowly.

Nathan crouched in front of her.

“Who is Mateo Reyes?”

Claire stared at Lily, who was half-asleep again with her thumb near her mouth.

“Daniel’s brother,” she whispered.

“You said you didn’t know where he was.”

“I don’t.”

“But he has been looking for you?”

Claire covered her mouth.

“I hoped he stopped.”

Nathan waited.

Claire’s voice shook.

“Daniel wasn’t just cruel. He owed people money. Bad people. Mateo was worse. After Daniel died, Mateo came to my apartment and said family debts become family responsibilities. I was seven months pregnant.”

Nathan’s face hardened.

“What did he want?”

Claire looked at Lily.

“He wanted my baby.”

Nathan went still.

Claire continued, tears falling silently now.

“He said Daniel’s blood belonged with the Reyes family. He said if I ever had a daughter, she would not be raised poor by a woman who scrubbed toilets. I moved three times before Lily was born. Changed numbers. Changed jobs. I thought he lost us.”

Nathan stood slowly.

Owen’s phone buzzed.

He checked it and looked at Nathan.

“What?” Nathan asked.

Owen’s jaw tightened.

“Sir, there’s a man at the south gate.”

Claire’s stomach dropped.

May you like

Owen looked at her.

“He says his name is Mateo Reyes.”
