CHAPTER 2 — THE WILL THAT BURNED THE ROOM

CHAPTER 2 — THE WILL THAT BURNED THE ROOM

The room didn’t feel real anymore.

It felt like something had shifted under the floor—like the truth had weight, and it was pressing everyone down.

Victor Hale’s mouth opened, but no sound came out at first.

“A trust fund?” he finally repeated, his voice thinner now. “That’s impossible. Caleb never—”

Amanda Reeves didn’t even look at him.

She turned slightly toward me instead.

“Ellie,” she said softly, “Caleb left very specific instructions. He anticipated… certain reactions.”

Brent shifted behind the security officers, still watching Noah like he was trying to memorize him.

Like he was still thinking of taking him.

That thought made my stomach tighten.

Amanda opened the folder again.

“This is not just a trust fund,” she continued. “It is a conditional estate structure, activated immediately upon Caleb Morgan’s death.”

My mother let out a sharp laugh.

“This is ridiculous. He was a businessman, not a prophet.”

Amanda finally looked at her.

“He was a man married into your family for six years,” she said. “And during that time, he documented everything.”

She placed a second document on the table.

A list.

Names.

Dates.

Recordings.

My father stepped forward despite himself.

“What is that?”

Amanda answered calmly.

“Evidence.”

The word hit harder than a shout.

Brent suddenly spoke.

“This is harassment. You can’t just walk in here and—”

“You’re already under investigation,” Amanda interrupted.

Silence again.

Even Brent stopped talking.

She continued.

“Caleb suspected that in the event of his death, Ellie and her children would be… isolated. Controlled. Possibly removed from decision-making entirely.”

My breath caught.

Removed.

Not protected.

Removed.

Amanda slid one final document forward.

“This clause is the reason I’m here in person.”

Victor leaned forward.

And then he read it.

His face changed instantly.

“No…” he whispered.

My mother leaned in.

“What? What does it say?”

Victor didn’t answer.

So Amanda did.

“If Ellie or her children are threatened, manipulated, or forcibly separated, the entire Hale family branch is permanently disqualified from any inheritance, business control, or access to Caleb Morgan’s estate.”

A pause.

Then she added:

“And the assets are transferred to a protected offshore guardian trust… named solely under Ellie Morgan.”

My ears rang.

That meant everything.

Control.

Money.

Power.

All of it.

Victor’s voice cracked.

“This is illegal.”

Amanda finally smiled—just slightly.

“No,” she said. “It’s airtight.”

Brent suddenly took a step forward again.

“Ellie, you don’t understand what they’re doing—”

Security moved instantly.

This time, closer.

He stopped.

But his eyes stayed on me.

Not angry anymore.

Calculating.

And that was worse.

Amanda closed the folder.

“There is one more instruction,” she said.

My stomach dropped.

“What instruction?” I whispered.

She looked at me.

“Caleb requested that if his family attempted interference…”

She paused.

The room went completely silent.

“…all contact with Ellie and the children must be permanently severed.”

Victor froze.

My mother blinked.

Brent whispered, “That’s not possible…”

Amanda answered:

“It already happened.”

Then she stepped aside.

And the hospital monitors behind me began to beep faster—not because of panic.

But because for the first time in my life…

I realized I wasn’t trapped in their world anymore.

They were trapped outside mine.

And then—

The door opened again.

But this time…

It wasn’t law.

It wasn’t family.

It was someone else entirely.

A man in a federal badge.

“Ellie Morgan?” he asked.

My blood turned cold.

“Yes?”

He looked at Amanda.

Then at Victor.

Then at Brent.

May you like

And finally said:

“We need to talk about Caleb Morgan’s death. It may not have been natural.”
