Chapter 12 - The Brother Who Never Existed

Sophia refused to leave the hospital until Emma was fully examined.
The doctors said the child’s lungs were irritated by smoke but stable. She would recover. She needed rest, fluids, and quiet.
Quiet was impossible.
News vans had already gathered outside the Duca estate gates. Reporters shouted questions about attempted murder, arrests, family scandal, and rumors of a poisoned coffee cup.
By sunset, the story was everywhere.
Billionaire Saved By Housekeeper’s Toddler.
Duca Family Poison Plot.
Three-Year-Old Witness Exposes Dynasty Crime.
Sophia hated every headline.
They turned Emma into a miracle.
A symbol.
A viral child.
But to Sophia, Emma was simply a tired little girl asleep in a hospital bed with a bandage on her arm and a torn rabbit tucked under her chin.
Alessandro arrived after dark.
He looked exhausted.
Smoke stained his collar. A cut marked his cheek. But his eyes were alert and troubled.
Sophia stood from the chair.
“Did they catch him?”
“Yes. Drake is in custody. Beatrice and Raffaele too.”
Sophia exhaled.
For the first time all day, her shoulders dropped.
Then she noticed his expression.
“What happened?”
Alessandro looked at Emma asleep in the bed.
“Not here.”
Sophia followed him into the hall.
He handed her the photograph.
She stared at it.
“Two babies?”
“I had a twin.”
Sophia looked up sharply.
“You didn’t know?”
“No.”
“Could he still be alive?”
“That’s what Drake wanted me to wonder.”
Sophia handed the photo back.
“Why tell me?”
Alessandro paused.
Because she had earned the truth.
Because her daughter had saved his life.
Because Marco’s death had opened a grave under his own family.
Because, somehow, in one terrible day, this housekeeper had become the only person in his life who looked at him without wanting something.
“I don’t know who else to tell,” he said.
Sophia’s expression softened, but only slightly.
“You have police.”
“I have lawyers. Detectives. Security. Employees.” He looked through the glass at Emma. “I don’t have many people who tell the truth when it costs them.”
Sophia folded her arms.
“The truth is my daughter almost died today because rich people buried their crimes under marble.”
Alessandro accepted the hit.
“Yes.”
“And my husband died because nobody listened.”
“Yes.”
“And now you found a secret brother, and I’m supposed to feel sorry for you?”
“No.”
That answer stopped her.
Alessandro’s voice was quiet.
“I’m asking you to let me make this right.”
Sophia looked away.
“Some things don’t get made right.”
“I know.”
Silence settled between them.
Then Emma stirred inside the room.
“Mommy?”
Sophia immediately returned to the bed.
Alessandro stayed in the doorway.
Emma blinked sleepily at him.
“Sir?”
His throat tightened.
“You can call me Alessandro.”
She considered this.
“Your coffee was bad.”
“Yes.”
“Daddy knew too.”
Alessandro stepped closer.
“He did.”
“Did Daddy help?”
Sophia’s eyes filled.
Alessandro crouched beside the hospital bed.
“Yes, Emma. Your daddy helped save everyone.”
The child smiled faintly.
Then she closed her eyes again.
Sophia wiped her tears.
Alessandro stood.
“I spoke with Detective Harper. Marco’s case will be reopened. Officially.”
Sophia covered her mouth.
“And,” Alessandro continued, “Duca Industries will provide full legal support. Not as charity. As restitution.”
Sophia looked at him.
“Restitution doesn’t bring him back.”
“No. But it can drag the truth into daylight.”
Before she could answer, Alessandro’s phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
He almost ignored it.
Then a message appeared.
DO NOT LOOK FOR YOUR BROTHER.
A second message followed.
HE IS CLOSER THAN YOU THINK.
Sophia saw his face change.
“What?”
Alessandro handed her the phone.
She read the words.
Then, from inside the hospital room, Emma whispered in her sleep.
“Bad man smells like flowers.”
Sophia froze.
Alessandro looked at her.
“Flowers?”
Sophia turned slowly toward the hallway.
Near the nurses’ station stood a tall man holding a bouquet of white lilies.

He was watching Emma’s door.
And he had Alessandro’s face.
