CHAPTER 2 — THE SILENCE AFTER THE STORM

CHAPTER 2 — THE SILENCE AFTER THE STORM

The courtroom didn’t feel real anymore.

It felt like a place that had just lost its soul.

Officers were still dragging Clara and Julian out, their voices echoing down the hallway in broken rage and denial. But what lingered wasn’t the chaos.

It was the recording.

That final sentence.

“If anything happens to me, Clara and Julian did it.”

The judge called for an immediate recess, but no one moved. Even the jurors sat frozen, staring at the small pink toy phone sitting on the evidence table like it had rewritten reality itself.

I still stood near Mrs. Gable.

Her hands were shaking.

Not like fear.

Like something inside her had finally cracked open after years of being sealed shut.

“They killed him…” she whispered.

I looked up at her.

“You knew my dad?”

Her lips parted, but no sound came out at first.

Then she nodded slowly.

“I raised him after your grandfather died. I saw what that family did to him before he even became a man.”

My chest tightened.

“I thought he died in an accident.”

Mrs. Gable let out a bitter laugh.

“That’s what they made everyone believe.”

Outside the courtroom, sirens grew louder.

But inside me, something else was waking up.

Questions.

Too many questions.

Who really was my father?

And why did they need him gone?

That night, I was placed in Mrs. Gable’s temporary custody.

The house was quiet.

Too quiet.

The kind of quiet that makes you think the walls are listening.

I sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the toy phone.

It was still warm from the recording.

Mrs. Gable stood in the doorway.

“They won’t stop,” she said suddenly.

I looked up.

“Who?”

“The Sterlings don’t lose. They erase.”

Her words didn’t feel like a warning.

They felt like experience.

That’s when the lights outside flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then went out completely.

A long silence followed.

May you like

And then—

A knock at the door.
